The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum has frowned on the ongoing killings in the Zamfara State, stating that the situation should be brought under control immediately.
Spokesman for the SMBLF, Yinka Odumakin, noted that the criminality in the state which had claimed thousands of lives might be politically motivated.
Reacting to the call for declaration of a state of emergency in Zamfara by Governor Abdulaziz Yari, the forum argued that he might have endorsed the move because his party, the All Progressives Congress, would not field candidates for the 2019 general elections.
Odumakin warned against playing politics with human lives, and urged the Federal Government to halt the killings in the country.
He said, “There has been insinuations that there is official knowledge or even involvement in what is going in Zamfara because a political party does not have candidates there and they do not want elections to hold.
“So, when the governor said he didn’t mind a declaration of a state of emergency, you can put two and two together. Clearly, what is going on in Zamfara is very serious, there is wanton waste of lives.”
Odumakin added, “There is the possibility that what is happening there is motivated by political reasons and it is important that people should not play dangerous politics using human lives. For the governor to postulate about a state of emergency declaration means the situation might be politically motivated.”
